POCHIN SCOOPS RIBA WALES AWARD
1 June 2009
Ruthin Craft Centre, built by Pochin Construction Ltd and designed
by Sergison Bates Architects, is one of two schemes in Wales to be
recognised by RIBA at this year's award ceremony.
The £3.1million scheme, fought off stiff competition from
schemes from all over Wales and will now be one of over 100
projects that will now go forward for consideration for this
year's RIBA Stirling Prize. Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre
was the second winner, designed by David Archer Architects. The
shortlist for the event is due to be announced in July.
Situated in the Vale of Clwyd, the craft centre has been jointly
funded by The Arts Council of Wales (ACW), the Welsh Assembly
Government, Denbighshire County Council and Ruthin Town Council.
The building incorporated design features including a specially
shaped zinc roof, which echoes the shapes of the surrounding hills
and area and coloured concrete panel walls.
The news comes hot on the heels of Pochin Construction's latest
award by the Britsh Council of Offices (BCO) for its work at the
HKR-designed Ministry of Defence's headquarters at Exchange
Flags, in Liverpool city centre.
On the award win, Jonathan Pochin, Managing Director at Pochin
Construction commented: "As this centre has been created to
become world-class hub for applied arts, it was only fitting that
the Design and Build quality reflected this. To become one of only
two schemes in Wales to be recognised by RIBA is a phenomenal
achievement and the whole design and construction team is extremely
proud."
