POCHIN GOES GREEN WITH NEW MAJOR SCOTTISH WIND FARM

February 2010

Pochin Concrete Pumping Ltd, part of Cheshire-based Pochin's PLC, has begun work on the site of Scottish Power Renewable's 120MW Arecleoch Wind Farm, which when complete will be one of the largest wind farms in Scotland.

The £42million project lies within 24 sq km of commercial forest plantation in the hills of South Aryshire, the majority of which is Forestry Commission land, leased by ScottishPower Renewables for the duration of the 25-year design life of the wind farm. Once in operation, the wind farm will produce enough power to service around 70,000 homes.

The initial phase of preparatory works for the farm is well underway and involved laying 65 km of roads and tracks to allow access for the delivery of the 60 wind turbines. Pochin Concrete Pumping will be supplying a 36m boom and standby pump to pour each of the turbine bases, for which, 350m³ of reinforced concrete foundations will be poured each week.

On the contract, David Pochin, director at Pochin Concrete Pumping, commented: "Renewable energy is a sector that is thriving in Scotland and we are scheduled to work on a range of renewable energy projects throughout Scotland over the next few years. Looking ahead we will be working on Clyde Wind Farm near Abington, which will be the largest project in Europe, with 151 wind turbines planned. We are also scheduled to work with Scottish Power on its East Kilbride project which has plans for 140 turbines."
