POCHIN COMMENCES AT KNOYDART PIER

Pochin Concrete Pumping has commenced work on a new pier at Inverie on the Knoydart Peninsula, part of a £6.5 million plan by Highland Council.

The project has been commissioned to improve links with the Peninsula, which at present is only accessible by sea or a 16-mile walk in. Pochin's complex task on the development is to pump a total of 4,500m3 of concrete underwater and placed by divers to set anchor blocks for the foundation of the pier.

Inverie is the fourth pier to be built as part of the Small Isles pier improvements following on from Muck, Rum and Eigg.

Roger Trussell of the Knoydart Community Association and Foundation said, "The community looks forward to the completion of this lifeline project. The existing pier is on its last legs. The new slipway and pier will allow all states of the tide access and in worse weather conditions. This will benefit both residents and the increasing number of visitors."

Jim Woodyer, Contract Manager on the project for Pochin, added, "We are delighted to be working on this development that will no doubt enhance Inverie. The complex design of the pier has required us to provide a trailer pump and mast that will assist in laying the foundations on this historic scheme."

The pier is due to be completed by October of this year.
